Overview

The American Enterprise Institute (AEI) is seeking a full-time, in-person research assistant to work with our health policy experts. These experts study a wide variety of health policy issues including health care financing, delivery-system reform, and pharmaceutical regulation.


Responsibilities include supporting research by editing and contributing to scholarly papers, articles, op-eds, and books and creating and formatting charts, graphic displays, and tables. Non-research responsibilities involve coordinating events, assisting scholars with administrative tasks, and aiding in the promotion of AEI’s health policy activities.


Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in health and public policy and experience with research.

Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support research through data retrieval and analysis.
  • Conduct literature reviews of various national and international publications.
  • Edit and contribute to scholarly papers. Edit and draft articles and op-eds aimed at a more general audience.
  • Monitor federal and state health policy changes and track emerging health care markets.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Summarize selected articles and reports.
  • Create and format charts, graphic displays, and tables.
  • Provide administrative support for scholars.
  • Coordinate public and private events on behalf of scholars.
  • Draft AEI’s monthly health policy newsletter, Vital Signs.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions at AEI

  • The employee is regularly expected to stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard. This job requires close-up vision for computer work.
  • The employee must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • The employee must be able to work in a confined area.
  • Moderate noise (e.g., from computers, phones, printers, and light traffic) is expected.

Qualifications

  • 0 – 2 years of previous applicable full-time work experience; previous internship experience strongly preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, public health, public policy, political science, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in health policy, including past research or academic experiences.
  • Proficiency in Excel in required; proficiency in Stata and R is preferred.
  • An understanding of federal health care programs (e.g., Medicare and Medicaid) and policymaking processes is preferred.

Compensation is based on a number of factors, including the position’s scope and responsibilities; a candidate’s full-time, applicable work experience; key skills and qualifications; and internal and external market considerations. The salary range for this full-time, exempt position is $50,000–$54,000. Salary is just one component of AEI’s total compensation package for employees.
