About the Role

AEI seeks a full-time, in-person Coalitions Manager to lead outreach efforts that engage state and federal leaders with AEI scholars and their work to advance the mission of AEI. The manager will be responsible for delivering scholar-led outreach priorities and large-scale Coalitions programs that aim to affect real-world policy change.

Day-to-day responsibilities include relationship-building, personnel management, event planning and promotion, metrics tracking and reporting, and designing and delivering outreach strategies that cultivate external engagement around AEI’s work in Washington, DC, and across the country. These responsibilities require excellent interpersonal skills, an entrepreneurial mindset, attention to detail, and very strong writing and communication skills; the ability to work on multiple projects at once, often under tight deadlines; and an ability to work closely in a team environment while independently managing multiple assignments.

The ideal candidate will have 3+ years of professional work experience in a relevant area—including government relations, outreach, marketing and communications, events, and/or business management—and be passionate about AEI’s mission, be familiar with public policy, and thrive in an intellectual, creative, fast-paced, and detail-oriented environment.

The position will interface regularly with scholars, other internal stakeholders, and external stakeholders in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. This role requires domestic travel approximately one to five times a quarter for meetings, conferences, and events, as well as occasional attendance at internal and external events in the evenings. This position will report to the Director, Coalitions. The anticipated start date is as soon as possible.

Core Responsibilities

• Design and manage outreach strategies for a growing policy portfolio that supports scholar-defined goals.
• Cultivate relationships, identify partnership opportunities, and oversee external communications that build external stakeholder engagement around a set of policy issues and other Coalitions initiatives.
• Manage and mentor junior staff, providing guidance, feedback, and professional development opportunities. Oversee project workflows and ensure timely and effective execution of Coalitions projects.
• Manage small and large-scale Coalitions programs, including meetings, briefings, conferences, and policy summits, in Washington, DC, and across the country.
• Utilize institutional software (e.g., Salesforce) to develop, track, and report on metrics, targets, and outcomes related to Coalitions activities.
• Represent AEI in DC and around the country at meetings, conferences, and events.

Physical requirements and working conditions at AEI

• The employee is regularly expected to stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard. This job requires close vision abilities due to computer work.
• The employee must be able to lift up to 30 pounds at times.
• The employee must be able to work in a confined area.
• Moderate noise (e.g., from computers, phone, printers, and light traffic) is expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• 3+ years of work experience in government relations, outreach, marketing and communications, events, and/or business management.
• Demonstrated commitment to and passion for AEI’s mission.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a high-pressure and fast-paced environment, exhibiting time-management skills and a proven ability to meet deadlines.
• Demonstrated ability to proactively and creatively anticipate challenges, needs, and opportunities while bringing a “who needs to know” mindset to coordinating and resourcing a wide array of internal and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships at AEI and externally through excellent interpersonal, writing, and communication skills.
• Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
• Good judgement.
• Experience with a contact management database, such as Salesforce, and an email marketing system is a plus.

Compensation is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: scope and responsibilities of the position; a candidate's full-time, applicable work experience; key skills and qualifications; as well as internal and external market considerations. The salary range for this full-time, exempt position is $60,000 - $70,000, though AEI is willing to explore higher compensation for an exceptional and experienced candidate. Salary is just one component of AEI’s total compensation package for employees.
